From City Hall: Fireworks not permitted

 – By

A couple of years ago the South Dakota legislature made a change in the law regarding the sale and discharging of fireworks. As well as near July fourth, fireworks now can be sold beginning December twenty-eighth and extending through January first.

Our Hot Springs city ordinances, however, do not allow the sale or possession, of fireworks, except the period from June 27 through July 4 of each year. Our ordinance only allows for the discharge of fireworks from July 2 through July 4 as well.

Please remember that although fireworks can be purchased close to New Year’s Eve, they are not permitted in the city of Hot Springs, by ordinance.

The ordinance also says a public display of fireworks is allowed with a written permit, and approval of the city council, so our normal July 4th - and now our New Year’s Eve displays - are legal and allowed by ordinance.

We will have a fireworks display the evening of December 31 near the Mueller Center, so plan to take it in. Just remember that other discharge of fireworks is not allowed in the city limits.
