Hot Springs has a number of historic properties listed on the US Department of Interior, National Park Service, National Register of Historic Places. The following files provide information about the six properties that are individually listed on the National Register.
In addition to these properties Hot Springs has a historic district that is listed on the National Register. Created in 1974, the Hot Springs Historic District is an irregularly shaped district, as described in the nomination and was developed "for the preservation of the historical, archeological, architectural and cultural heritage of the City of Hot Springs and to promote the use and conservation of such property for the education, inspiration, pleasure and enrichment of the citizens of Hot Springs, the State of South Dakota and the United States."
In 2011 the Battle Mountain Sanitarium was bestowed with the title of National Historic Landmark - the highest historic preservation designation allowed. It is now part of the Department of the Interior's Shared Heritage Travel Itinerary. The Battle Mountain Sanitarium in Hot Springs was established on approximately 101 Acres in 1902 and opened in 1907. It is the oldest facility in the VA Medical System established solely to provide medical care and is now identified as the Hot Springs VA Medical Center. The original sandstone buildings were designed by reknowned Omaha architect Thomas Rogers Kimball in the Mission/Spanish Revival inspired style.
